Part 04 · Caring for the machine

Descaling an espresso machine: what makers actually say

Some makers say never at home. Others set a schedule, or tie it to your water. Here is each position in the maker's own words.

The short answer

Makers disagree more about descaling than almost anything else. Rocket Espresso doesn't recommend descaling its machines. ECM and Profitec say a machine with built-up scale should be descaled only by a dealer. Gaggia's Classic Pro manual says every two months with Gaggia's own product, and Decent says citric acid only.

Makers that say don't, or leave it to a dealer

Several prosumer makers would rather you avoided descaling at home. Rocket Espresso says so outright:

ECM and Profitec allow descaling only as prevention. Once scale has built up, they want a dealer to do it, because the boiler may need to come apart:

“A calcified machine should only be descaled by a qualified technician in our authorized dealer as it may require partial disassembly of the boiler and tubing to prevent clogging of the entire system by limescale residues. Delaying descaling can result in significant damage to the machine.”

Makers that set a schedule

Others give a schedule, by time, by use or by the water. Gaggia's Classic Pro manual says every two months. Ascaso counts coffees a day. Lelit says once a year for the Bianca and Elizabeth.

Which descaler

Makers that name a descaler often name their own, or rule others out. Philips and Saeco list acids not to use, vinegar among them. Breville's manual for the Duo-Temp Pro gives a vinegar solution. Read your own manual, because the advice runs both ways.

Descaling starts with the water

Scale comes from the water, so the water decides how often a machine needs descaling. ACS says that even low-mineral bottled water doesn't remove the need entirely:

From the maker

ACSMinima (owners manual)

“Even if you use bottled water of a low mineral content or filters/filter jugs, eventually the machine will require descaling. The only system that completely removes the need for descaling is softening, or Reverse Osmosis with remineralisation using non scaling ions.”

The water check compares your water with your maker's hardness and other limits. Our descaling and cleaning page lists descalers with the machines their makers name.

Questions

Can I descale with vinegar?

It depends on the maker. Philips and Saeco manuals say never to use vinegar, and Gaggia's Classic Pro manual says never vinegar or other agents. Breville's Duo-Temp Pro manual gives a vinegar solution. Follow your own manual.

How often should I descale?

Use your maker's schedule. Some go by time, some by use, and Decent Espresso and Meticulous go by the water's TDS.
