What water does this machine require?
Breville hasn't published a limit our check can use for this machine yet, so the check can't give it a result. Whatever the maker does say is quoted below.
Shown, but not used to decide (1)
- Total dissolved solids (TDS), 50–150 ppm. Guidance the maker gives as an ideal, a recommendation or a care tier, not as a limit. The maker's words for Total dissolved solids (TDS).
Will my water work with this machine?
Add your water from a test strip, a report or your city's numbers, and we'll check it against the maker's limits above. It stays in this browser.
The maker's water guidance
From Breville's guidance for this model.
Water filter
“Replacing the water filter every three months will reduce the need to descale the machine.”
Hardness setting: 4–5 Breville test strip result (bars)
“Input the water hardness test strip result to the machine. If result is 4 or 5 bars when tested, we strongly recommend to change to an alternate water source. Filtered water will extend both the life of your built-in filter and descale intervals as well as provide superior taste.”
Very pure water
“Avoid using overly filtered water, like RO water unless some mineral content is being added back to the final water. Never use distilled water, or water with no or low mineral content as this will affect the taste of coffee.”
From Breville's guidance for Breville espresso machines (US support article; no models named).
Total dissolved solids (TDS): 50–150 ppm
“Water that lacks in mineral content can contribute to sourness and acidic taste in the espresso, it is recommended to use water that has mild amount of minerals like soft filtered water, spring water, well water, these types of water ideally measure in between 50-150 ppm (parts permillion) in dissolved solids.”
Very pure water
“Water with little or no mineral content may affect the taste of your coffee and how the machine is designed to operate.”
Remineralization
“Avoid using RO water if the filtration process removes nearly all of its mineral content. For applicable models, RO water may be suitable if some mineral content has been added back to the finished water.”
