The maker's water guidance
From ECM's guidance for this model.
Hardness, highest: up to 4 °dH
“You should use water with a hardness of max. 4° dH in order to protect your machine from lime scale damage.”
Descaling
“A calcified machine may only be descaled by your specialised dealer because a partial disassembly of the boiler and the tubing may be necessary to prevent the system from being blocked by lime residues.”
Water filter
“You can also use a water filter cartridge (item no. 89445.K) in the water tank (under the water tank lid) to help reduce limescale in the water and protect your espresso machine from limescale.”
Plumbed-in water
“To avoid calcification of the machine a water-softener is recommended.”
Water type
“Water tank machines or machines in water tank use: Do not operate the machine with carbonated water, but with soft, potable water.”
